The old town

Muros has one of the best-preserved fishing-town centres on the Galician coast. Its narrow streets climb from the sea between stone houses, granite arcades and small squares up to the collegiate church of Santa María do Campo. Everything can be done on foot, though there are slopes.

Staying in the old town lets you go out for a drink at night and walk back. The old houses are charming, but some have narrow stairs, so ask if you are travelling with a lot of luggage.

The seafront and the harbour

Opposite the old town, the promenade skirts the fishing harbour and the Muros e Noia estuary. This is where the liveliest terraces and the fish and seafood restaurants are. Following the shore you reach the Pozo Cachón tide mill, a good walk at sunset. It suits you if you want to wake up to water views with the centre on your doorstep.

San Francisco

A few kilometres west, San Francisco beach has white sand and very calm water, being inside the estuary. It is a family favourite. Around it are holiday homes and apartments, and Muros is a short drive back or, if you like walking, along the coast road.

Louro and Monte Louro

At the tip of the estuary, the hamlet of Louro sits at the foot of Monte Louro, next to the Xalfas lagoon and Area Maior beach, among dunes. It is a protected landscape with hiking trails and very few buildings. Choose this area if you are after nature and silence. The nights are very dark and the sky fills with stars when it is clear. From here the road to Carnota and Fisterra is close for trips along the Costa da Morte.
