What to see in Morro Jable

Must-sees

Morro Jable is in the south of Fuerteventura, on the Jandía peninsula. It mixes the old fishing village, with its harbour and sloping streets, and a tourist area by Playa del Matorral, a long beach of pale sand. A promenade runs along the coast to the lighthouse, one of the most photographed spots.

Behind the beach is the Jandía salt marsh, a protected wetland with wooden boardwalks. Ferries to Gran Canaria leave from the harbour. On the other side of the mountains, along a dirt track, you reach Cofete beach, wild and almost untouched, and Punta de Jandía with its lighthouse, inside Jandía Natural Park.

Free tours and guided visits

Walking free tours are rare in Morro Jable. The usual options are guided excursions from here, above all 4x4 trips to Cofete and Punta de Jandía, with stops at viewpoints and at Villa Winter, a house surrounded by legends.

Boat or catamaran trips along the Jandía coast, sometimes with whale and dolphin watching, are also popular, as are diving, fishing and kayaking from the harbour. To see the interior of Fuerteventura there are full-day trips to Betancuria, Ajuy and the north of the island, although the journeys from here are long.

How long to spend

The town takes half a day, between the harbour, the promenade and the lighthouse. Spend another day on Cofete and Punta de Jandía, ideally with a guide or a suitable vehicle. If you are on a beach holiday, a week lets you alternate rest with excursions, although to see the whole island it is worth hiring a car for a couple of days.

Where to stay

If you want the beach in front of you, the tourist area by Matorral and the promenade is the most practical, with services and restaurants close at hand. The old town, near the harbour, has a more local feel and good places for fish. For peace and quiet, the Jandía development, higher up, offers views and less bustle.
