What to see in Betanzos

Must-sees

Betanzos was one of the capitals of the old Kingdom of Galicia, and its historic centre, on a hill between the rivers Mendo and Mandeo, shows it. Its Gothic churches are the highlight. San Francisco holds the tomb of Fernán Pérez de Andrade, resting on a bear and a boar. Very close are Santa María do Azougue and Santiago, forming a remarkable group in just a few streets.

Life centres on the square of the Hermanos García Naveira, wide and surrounded by arcades. From there narrow streets lead down to the bridges and the old river port. On the outskirts is the Pasatiempo park, an early 20th-century garden full of figures and reliefs, gradually being restored. And do not leave without trying the very runny tortilla de Betanzos.

Free tours and guided visits

Betanzos sometimes has guided walks of the historic centre, occasionally pay-what-you-wish, although there is no fixed schedule. Guided visits focusing on the Gothic churches and medieval history are a good way to understand the town. Interesting trips from here include the Fragas do Eume natural park, a valuable Atlantic forest, and the city of A Coruña, less than half an hour away.

How long to spend

Four to six hours are enough for the historic centre, the churches and a meal. If you want to add the Pasatiempo park and a riverside walk, give it the whole day. With two or three days you can use Betanzos as a base for the Fragas do Eume and A Coruña. In August, the San Roque festivities liven the town up.

Where to stay

The most convenient choice is to stay in or around the historic centre, near the main square. That way the churches, bars and restaurants are a few minutes’ walk away. Bear in mind the centre is hilly. If you are driving and want to explore the area, places near the entrance to town make parking easier.
