What to see in Orbaneja del Castillo

Must-sees

Orbaneja del Castillo is a small village in northern Burgos, in the Ebro canyon, inside the Hoces del Alto Ebro y Rudrón natural park. Its most striking feature is the waterfall that springs from the Cueva del Agua and runs through the village down to the river. Stone and timber houses with balconies are scattered around it.

Above the village rise great limestone formations that look like walls and towers. You can climb a path to the top for views of the village and the canyon from above. On the way down, cross the bridge over the Ebro and look at the tufa the water has built up over time.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free tours in Orbaneja. Most people visit on their own, with the odd guided walk in season, or as part of organised trips around northern Burgos. These usually combine Orbaneja with the Pozo Azul at Covanera, the Puentedey bridge, the town of Frías or the Ojo Guareña cave system. There are also guided hikes in the Ebro canyon and the Rudrón valley.

How long to spend

The village takes two or three hours, including the climb to the top. Come early or late in the afternoon, because in summer and at weekends it gets crowded. If you want to see the area, allow a full day or two: one for Orbaneja and the Pozo Azul, and another for Frías, Puentedey or Ojo Guareña.

Where to stay

Sleeping in the village itself has its advantages: you see it without day visitors, with the waterfall as the only sound. Beds are few, so book ahead. Another option is to stay in Sedano or a village in the Rudrón valley, from where you can easily drive around the area.
