What to see in Puebla de Sanabria

Must-sees

Puebla de Sanabria sits on a hill beside the rivers Tera and Castro. At the top is the 15th-century castle of the Counts of Benavente, with its keep and a small interpretation centre. Next to it are the Romanesque church of Santa María del Azogue and the town hall, with its arcade. The cobbled streets running down from the square have stone houses, wooden balconies and slate roofs.

A few kilometres away is Lake Sanabria, the largest glacial lake in the Iberian Peninsula, within a natural park. In summer it has cold-water beaches and lakeside trails. From the road up to San Martín de Castañeda you see the lake from above, and the village has a monastery and a park interpretation centre. Higher still, the Laguna de los Peces is the starting point for mountain routes.

Free tours and guided visits

Pay-what-you-like free walking tours are uncommon here. The usual options are guided visits of the historic ensemble and the castle, which explain the town's history as a border stronghold facing Portugal. The most interesting trips are in the natural park: guided walks around the lake, boat trips and mountain outings to the glacial lakes. There are also visits linking the lake with the legend of Valverde de Lucerna, which inspired Unamuno.

How long to spend

Three or four hours are enough for Puebla's historic centre, including the castle. Ideally, spend at least two days in the area. Use the first for the town and an afternoon at the lake. On the second, go up to San Martín de Castañeda and the Laguna de los Peces for a walk. If you go in summer, leave time for a swim at the lake beaches.

Where to stay

You have two clear options. Sleeping in Puebla's historic centre lets you stroll its cobbled streets at night and have dinner without the car. Staying near the lake, in villages such as El Puente or Galende or in the surrounding rural houses, puts you beside the beaches and the trails. Both areas are a few minutes apart by car, so choose based on whether you prefer village atmosphere or nature.
