What to see in Mondoñedo

Must-sees

Mondoñedo is a small town in the interior of A Mariña de Lugo, with a well-preserved historic centre. At its core is the cathedral, Romanesque in origin with a Baroque façade, presiding over a broad square. Inside you can see the Cathedral Museum. The streets around the square keep mansions with coats of arms, arcades and glazed balconies.

Close by is the Fonte Vella, a Renaissance fountain next to the cathedral, and the Os Muíños neighbourhood by the river, with its old mills. The Os Remedios Sanctuary and the Santa Catalina Seminary are also worth a visit. Mondoñedo was the birthplace of the writer Álvaro Cunqueiro and is a stop on the Northern Way of St James.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are uncommon in Mondoñedo, although you may find some in high season. Guided visits of the historic centre and the cathedral are the norm, explaining the town's past as a bishop's seat and former provincial capital of the Kingdom of Galicia. Some include the interior of the cathedral and its museum.

From here you can take trips to the Monastery of Lourenzá, a few kilometres away, and to the A Mariña coast, with Foz, Burela and Ribadeo. From Ribadeo you can visit the Praia das Catedrais, with its rock arches; in summer access requires advance booking. Before you leave, try the Mondoñedo tart, made with almonds and angel-hair squash jam.

How long to spend

Four or five hours are enough to see Mondoñedo: the cathedral and its museum, the square, the Fonte Vella and a walk through Os Muíños. To add Lourenzá and the coast, allow a full day, or stay two to see Ribadeo and the Praia das Catedrais at a relaxed pace. Early morning is a good time for the cathedral, with fewer people.

Where to stay

The best area to stay is the historic centre, around the cathedral, as everything is within walking distance and the evenings are quiet. In the surrounding area there are rural houses for those seeking nature. If you also plan to explore the coast, staying in Ribadeo or Foz and visiting Mondoñedo on a day trip is another option.
