What to see in Peñafiel

Must-sees

Peñafiel castle crowns a long ridge above the village and is shaped like a ship, which makes it unmistakable from the road. Inside is the Provincial Wine Museum, a good introduction to the Ribera del Duero. From the walls you can see the vineyards and the Duratón valley. It is worth climbing up at leisure and exploring the courtyard and the keep.

In the village, the Plaza del Coso stands out, a rectangular earth-floored space surrounded by houses with wooden balconies, designed long ago for bullfighting festivities. Also visit the church of San Pablo, of Mudéjar origin and linked to the Infante Don Juan Manuel, and the Clock Tower. Beneath many houses are underground cellars, recognisable by the ventilation chimneys, called zarceras, poking out of the slopes.

Free tours and guided visits

Peñafiel does not usually have regular pay-what-you-like free walking tours. The norm is the guided visit to the castle and the wine museum, and guided walks around the old town and the Plaza del Coso. The most sought-after experience is a Ribera del Duero winery visit, with a tour of the facilities and a tasting. There are also day trips from Valladolid that combine Peñafiel with other villages in the area.

How long to spend

A full day works well. In the morning, go up to the castle and the wine museum, which will take about two hours. Then come down to the Plaza del Coso and San Pablo, and leave the afternoon for one or two wineries. If you want to see more Ribera villages, such as Curiel de Duero or Aranda, add a second day.

Where to stay

The most comfortable choice is to stay in central Peñafiel, near the Plaza del Coso or the main street, so you can walk between the castle and the restaurants. In the surroundings there are winery hotels and rural houses among the vineyards, a good option if you are driving and want peace. Valladolid is about 50 kilometres away if you prefer a city as your base.
