What to see in Tordesillas

Must-sees

Tordesillas is known for the treaty that in 1494 divided the lands yet to be discovered between Castile and Portugal. It was signed in the so-called Treaty Houses, now an interpretation centre by the river. Very close is the Royal Monastery of Santa Clara, once Peter I's palace. It keeps a Mudéjar-style courtyard, Arab baths and a chapel with a fine coffered ceiling.

Queen Joanna I spent almost half a century confined here, and her memory is present throughout the town. Walk around the square, arcaded Plaza Mayor and visit the church of San Antolín, which houses a sacred art museum. For the best view, cross the medieval bridge over the Duero and look back: the houses and towers are reflected in the water.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours in Tordesillas are scarce and depend on the season. The usual options are guided visits to the monastery of Santa Clara, which can only be seen with a guide, and walks around the historic centre focused on the treaty and Joanna I. There are also trips from Valladolid that combine Tordesillas with Medina del Campo or wineries in the nearby Rueda area.

How long to spend

Half a day covers the essentials: the monastery visit takes about an hour and the rest of the centre can be walked in another two. If you want a relaxed lunch and a riverside walk, give it the whole day. It is easy to combine with Medina del Campo or Toro, both a short drive away.

Where to stay

The best place to sleep is the historic centre, between the Plaza Mayor and the monastery, because everything is a few minutes' walk away. There are also hotels by the motorway exits, useful if you are passing through by car. Across the bridge you will find quieter options with river views. Valladolid, about 30 kilometres away, is another possible base.
