Where to stay in Milan: the best areas
Centre and Duomo
Between Piazza del Duomo, La Scala and Via Montenapoleone are the most central hotels, many in historic buildings. Everything is on foot: the cathedral, the Galleria, the Sforza Castle and the shopping streets. It is the most expensive area, but you save on travel if you are only there for a few days.
Brera
This district of cobbled streets, north of the centre, has boutique hotels, B&Bs and apartments. At night it fills with restaurants and bars, and the Pinacoteca and the Castle are a stroll away. It is a good base if you want atmosphere without straying far from the Duomo.
Navigli and Porta Ticinese
Along the southern canals there are apartments, small hotels and more informal places to stay. It is the liveliest area at dusk, with terraces along the water. The basilica of Sant'Ambrogio is nearby and the metro takes you to the centre in a few minutes.
Central Station and Porta Nuova
Around the Central Station there are many chain and business hotels, practical for arriving by train or taking day trips to the lakes. Next door, Porta Nuova brings together the new skyscrapers and the Bosco Verticale, with modern hotels. The metro lines link quickly with the centre.
