What to see in Baiona

Must-sees

Start at the Monterreal fortress, which occupies the whole peninsula opposite the port. You can walk round its walls in a loop of about three kilometres, with views of the bay and the Cíes Islands. Inside is the parador, but the outer grounds are free to explore. In the port is moored a replica of the caravel Pinta, which arrived here in 1493 with news of the discovery of America.

The historic centre is small and pleasant, with stone streets, fishermen’s houses and the collegiate church of Santa María. On the outskirts, on Monte Sansón, stands the Virgen de la Roca, a large granite statue you can climb inside up to the boat she holds in her hand. For the beach, Ladeira is the widest and most family-friendly.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours are uncommon in Baiona and mostly run in summer. When there are any, they cover the old town, the port and the story of the Pinta in an hour-and-a-half walk, on a pay-what-you-wish basis. More common are guided visits to the Monterreal complex and the boat trip to the Cíes Islands, which leaves from the port itself in season. A drive along the coast towards A Guarda and Monte Santa Tecla is also worthwhile.

How long to spend

A full day is enough to see Baiona at an easy pace. Spend the morning at Monterreal and the walk round the walls, and the afternoon on the old town, the caravel and the climb to the Virgen de la Roca. If you want to add the Cíes or a beach day, allow a second day. Baiona also works well as a base for Vigo and the southern Rías Baixas.

Where to stay

The most practical choice is to stay in the old town or near the port, with the fortress, the restaurants and the promenade within walking distance. If you are travelling in summer and want the beach, Ladeira and Sabarís are quieter and a few minutes away by car, or a long walk along the coast. Out of season there is far more availability and better prices.
