What to see in La Orotava

Must-sees

La Orotava sits on the slope of the valley that bears its name, in the north of Tenerife. Its historic centre keeps 17th- and 18th-century mansions with carved wooden balconies. The best known is the Casa de los Balcones, with a Canarian courtyard and a craft shop. Very close is the Baroque church of La Concepción, one of the most notable in the islands.

The town hall square is the stage for the carpets of Teide sand made for Corpus Christi. Among steep streets you will find old gofio mills, the Liceo de Taoro and the terraced gardens of the Marquesado de la Quinta Roja, with views over the valley. The Hijuela del Botánico is a small garden with exotic species.

Free tours and guided visits

La Orotava has guided walks around the historic centre and, in high season, pay-what-you-like free walking tours. They usually pass the Casa de los Balcones, La Concepción, the town hall square and the gardens, and explain the history of the town’s noble families. The most worthwhile excursion is the trip up to Teide National Park, much of which belongs to the municipality. There are guided day trips and stargazing outings at nightfall. Many excursions combine La Orotava with Puerto de la Cruz and Icod de los Vinos.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the historic centre. Go in the morning, walk the main streets, visit the Casa de los Balcones and La Concepción, and finish in the gardens with views over the valley. Combined with Puerto de la Cruz, below, it makes a full day. Set aside a separate day to go up Teide, as the drive and the stops take several hours.

Where to stay

Sleeping in La Orotava’s old town is a good option if you want peace and accommodation in old houses. There are also rural cottages scattered across the valley. The most common alternative is Puerto de la Cruz, a few kilometres away, with more hotels, a promenade, Lago Martiánez and the Botanical Garden. From either, Teide is less than an hour away by car.
