What to see in Tui

Must-sees

Tui looks out over the river Miño, directly opposite Portugal. Its historic centre climbs to the cathedral of Santa María, a Romanesque and Gothic building with the look of a fortress, battlements included. Note its Gothic portal and the cloister, from whose walls you can see the river. Around it are narrow streets, coats of arms on façades and churches such as Santo Domingo.

Then go down to the riverside walk and the iron International Bridge linking Tui with Valença. Crossing it on foot is part of the visit: on the other side is the walled fortress of Valença, with its bastions and shops. Tui is also a key stage of the Portuguese Way, so you will see pilgrims almost all year. For sweeping views, go up to the Monte Aloia natural park.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours in Tui are occasional. When they run, they cover the historic centre, the outside of the cathedral and the history of the border, on a pay-what-you-like basis. The most practical option is the guided visit to the cathedral and its cloister, which makes sense of what you see. Among excursions, the most natural is crossing to Valença, and routes along the lower Miño to its mouth at A Guarda or a day in Vigo are also worthwhile.

How long to spend

Half a day is enough for the historic centre and the cathedral at a relaxed pace. If you want to cross to Valença and stroll through its fortress, give it a full day: the morning in Tui and the afternoon across the river. With a second day you can go up Monte Aloia or walk a stretch of the Portuguese Way. Tui is also a good base for southern Pontevedra and northern Portugal.

Where to stay

The best choice is to stay in or near the historic centre, to have the cathedral, restaurants and riverside walk on foot. It is the liveliest area in the evening, especially because of the pilgrims. If you are driving and prefer calm, there are rural cottages and places to stay in the surroundings, with easy motorway access. Valença is another option if you want to sleep inside the Portuguese fortress.
