Where to stay in Venice: the best areas

San Marco and Castello

Around St Mark's Square there are hotels in old palazzi and many small places to stay, with the main sights a few steps away. Castello, to the east, is more residential and quieter, with guesthouses and apartments near the Riva degli Schiavoni and the Biennale gardens. Vaporetti leave from here for the Lido and the islands.

Cannaregio

This is a district where Venetians themselves still live, between Santa Lucia station and the Rialto. It has small hotels, B&Bs and apartments, with simple bars along the Fondamenta della Misericordia and degli Ormesini. The Ghetto is inside the district and boats to Murano and Burano leave from the Fondamente Nove.

Dorsoduro and San Polo

Dorsoduro, south of the Grand Canal, has a student feel, the Gallerie dell'Accademia and the Salute, and places to stay in restored houses. San Polo, by the Rialto, combines narrow alleys, the market and the Frari basilica. They are good areas for staying in the centre with a little less bustle than San Marco.

Mestre and the mainland

In Mestre, across the Ponte della LibertΓ , there are larger modern hotels, many near the station. Trains and buses reach Venice in a few minutes. It is practical if you are driving or want more choice, although you will have to go back and forth every day.
