What to see in Lugo

Must-sees

The Roman walls are the first thing to see in Lugo. They completely encircle the historic centre, measure just over two kilometres and have been a World Heritage Site since 2000. You can climb up at several points and walk all the way round on the wall-walk, looking over rooftops, towers and the modern city around them. It is an easy, free walk of about three quarters of an hour.

Inside the walls is the cathedral of Santa María, Romanesque in origin with later additions. The Plaza Mayor, Plaza del Campo and Calle de la Cruz make up the wine and tapas quarter. For the Roman past, visit the House of the Mosaics and the walls interpretation centre. Outside, by the Miño, are the bridge of Roman origin and the remains of the baths.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours cover the walls and the historic centre in about two hours, paid by tips. They explain the founding of Lucus Augusti, how and why the walls were built and what life was like in the Roman city. Some routes end in the wine quarter, a good moment to try the octopus or the free tapa that comes with each drink.

The most useful paid guided visits are those that enter Roman remains with controlled access. In late June, the Arde Lucus festival recreates the city’s Roman and Celtic past. As an excursion, the Ribeira Sacra, with the Sil canyons and terraced vineyards, is within reasonable reach.

How long to spend

One day is enough for the walls, the cathedral and the old town, with an afternoon of tapas. With two days you can go down to the river, see the Roman remains at leisure and walk the walls again at sunset. If you have a third day, spend it in the Ribeira Sacra, which needs a car or an organised trip.

Where to stay

Sleeping inside the walls is the most convenient: the cathedral, the wine quarter and the wall-walk access points are a few steps away. Just outside, around the Ronda da Muralla and nearby streets, there is more choice and you are still a stroll from everything. If you want calm, the Miño area by the bridge is quieter, although you will have to climb back up to the centre.
