What to see in Ponferrada

Must-sees

Ponferrada's great monument is the Templar castle, a huge fortress by the river Sil that was enlarged over centuries after the order left. You can visit inside, and it has good views of the town and the Bierzo mountains. A few steps away is the basilica of La Encina, dedicated to the district's patron saint, with a tower visible from afar.

The old town is covered in a short walk. Pass under the Clock Tower, an old gate in the wall, and continue along Calle del Reloj to the Baroque town hall square. The old prison houses the Museo del Bierzo, with pieces from several eras. Ponferrada is also a stage on the Camino de Santiago, and you will see pilgrims crossing the centre.

Free tours and guided visits

In Ponferrada you may find a pay-what-you-like free walking tour of the old town, focused on the Templar castle and the town's history. The castle also has its own guided visits, which help you understand its phases and legends. The best of the area lies outside the town, and there guided excursions are the usual format.

The most recommended trip is to Las Médulas, ancient Roman gold mines declared a World Heritage Site, with walking routes among peaks of reddish earth. The village of Peñalba de Santiago and the Valle del Silencio are also worthwhile, as is a visit to Bierzo wineries to taste the mencía grape.

How long to spend

One day is enough for the town: the morning for the castle and La Encina, the afternoon for the old town and the museum. If you want to see the district, allow two or three days and spend a whole one at Las Médulas and another in the valleys and wineries. That way you will not have to cram everything into a single day.

Where to stay

The most convenient area to stay is the old town, near the castle and the town hall square, because everything is within walking distance. The modern centre, across the river, has more hotels, shops and restaurants and good connections. If your plan is to explore the Bierzo, you can also stay in rural houses in villages such as Villafranca del Bierzo or around Las Médulas.
