Rupit’s medieval village

Rupit is a stone village perched over a stream in the Collsacabra area. You enter across the suspension bridge and, once inside, everything is on foot: Carrer del Fossar, with its steps cut into the rock, the church of Sant Miquel and the remains of the castle. The car stays in the car park at the entrance.

Sleeping in the village has its reward: when the day visitors leave, the streets fall silent. There are few places to stay and they are small, so book ahead for weekends. On weekdays and outside holidays the atmosphere is even calmer, with bars and restaurants serving local cooking, such as grilled meat and Osona cured sausages.

Farmhouses of Rupit i Pruit

The municipality of Rupit i Pruit is very large and dotted with farmhouses, many now rural holiday homes. They are surrounded by meadows and woods, and some are rented whole. They suit groups, families and hikers. From several of them you can walk to the Sallent waterfall or the hermitage of Santa Magdalena. Nearby, in Pruit, is the Romanesque church of Sant Joan de Fàbregues. To shop or have dinner in Rupit you will need the car, on narrow, winding roads. In winter, with fog or ice, drive carefully.

Tavertet

To the south-west, Tavertet sits on the edge of the cliffs dropping towards the Sau reservoir. It is a tiny village of stone houses, with open viewpoints and paths running along the clifftop. It has little accommodation and almost no services, but it is a base for anyone after scenery, walks and very dark nights. From here Rupit is a short drive away. It is worth two or three nights if you like walking.
