Where to stay in Montblanc: the best areas

Inside the walls

The medieval centre is compact and almost everything you want to see fits into one walk: the Plaça Major, the churches of Santa Maria and Sant Miquel, the Portal de Bover and the stretches of wall with towers. There are few places to stay, almost all small and in stone buildings, so book well ahead, especially in spring.

In the evening the streets empty and hardly any cars pass. It suits couples and travellers after history and good food, as the restaurants serving Conca de Barberà cooking are a couple of streets away.

The new town and the station area

Outside the walls, the new town has wider streets, supermarkets and room to park. It is useful if you are travelling with luggage or small children. The railway station is in this part, with trains to Lleida and Reus on the line through L'Espluga, though services are infrequent. From these streets you walk into the old town through any of its gates.

L'Espluga de Francolí and Poblet

The Poblet monastery lies between Montblanc and L'Espluga de Francolí. Staying in L'Espluga or near the monastery puts you close to the Cistercian complex, the Cova de la Font Major and the woods of the Poblet natural area, with trails for several days. It is the option for anyone who prefers nature and hiking to village life.

Farmhouses among the vineyards

Around the area there are restored farmhouses and rural holiday homes surrounded by vines, almond and olive trees. From them you can easily explore Santes Creus, Vallbona de les Monges and the Conca de Barberà designation wineries. You need a car, but in return you get silence, clear skies and space for groups.
