Where to stay in Vic: the best areas

Plaça Major and the old town

Everything revolves around the Plaça Major, the Mercadal, with its arcades and stone paving. A few steps away are the cathedral of Sant Pere, with murals by Josep Maria Sert, the Roman temple and the Episcopal Museum. The streets leading down from the square are full of delicatessens, pastry shops and tapas bars.

Staying here lets you enjoy market days from first thing, when the square fills with stalls. It is also where you buy the fuet and llonganissa sausages that made Osona famous. It is the area for a short break without a car.

Les Rambles and the station

Les Rambles ring the old town along the line of the old wall. They are wide streets with shops and a little more traffic, and put you in the centre in no time. From here you can walk to the station, served by the R3 commuter line linking Vic with Barcelona and with Ripoll and Puigcerdà. It suits you if you are arriving by train or heading on to the Pyrenees.

El Remei and the river Mèder

Across the river Mèder, the Remei district has a quiet, neighbourly feel. Here are the Queralt bridge, of medieval origin, and the church of El Remei. The Plaça Major is within walking distance, and it is a quieter alternative to the old town for sleeping.

Folgueroles and Calldetenes

If you prefer the countryside of the Plana de Vic, the surrounding villages are very close. Folgueroles is the birthplace of the poet Jacint Verdaguer and keeps his house museum. Calldetenes lies to the east, on the way to Les Guilleries. There are farmhouses and rural cottages here, good for families and groups who want to drive around Osona and visit the Sau reservoir.
