Old town

The medieval core surrounds the cathedral of Santa Maria, and its arcaded streets, such as Carrer dels Canonges and Carrer Major, hold most of the shops, pastry shops and restaurants. If it is your first time, sleeping here lets you see the cloister first thing and walk out to dinner. The streets are narrow and parking inside is difficult, so ask about a garage beforehand. On market days the centre fills with stalls and people from the district.

Ensanche and Parc del Segre

Outside the old town, the more modern part of the city extends towards the river and the Parc del Segre, the Olympic white-water channel. Here there are roomier places to stay, with garages and easy access to the N-145, the road to Andorra. It is the area for families, for those coming to raft or canoe and for those who spend the day in Andorra and come back to sleep.

Castellciutat

On the hill across the Valira, Castellciutat keeps the remains of its castle and citadel. From the top you get an open view of La Seu, the cathedral and the Cadí mountains. It is a place for couples and for those seeking silence. To get down to the centre you need a car or a long walk, with a steep climb on the way back.

Alt Urgell villages

Around the city are small villages such as Anserall, on the Andorra road, or the villages of Montferrer i Castellbò, home to Andorra–La Seu airport.
