Where to stay in L'Estartit: the best areas

Harbour and seafront

If you come to dive or see the Medes Islands, everything is close at hand here. Glass-bottom boats and dive club boats moor at the quays, so you can walk there carrying your gear. The promenade starts by the harbour and follows the beach, with terraces, ice-cream parlours and souvenir shops.

In July and August it is the busiest part until late. Families choose it because children have the sand right in front and you hardly need the car for the whole stay.

Inner streets of the village

Two or three streets back from the promenade, the noise drops considerably and you find apartments, terraced houses and small supermarkets. You are still a short walk from the sea and the harbour, but you sleep more peacefully. It suits couples and groups of divers staying several days who want their own kitchen. To the north, below the limestone bulk of the Montgrí, trails set off for the rocky coves.

South beach and La Pletera

To the south the sand continues to the mouth of the Ter. Along this strip are campsites, low-rise developments and much more space on the beach. By the river are the restored La Pletera lagoons, with boardwalks for birdwatching. It is the choice for those who prefer pines, bikes and a sun lounger to bars, and for those travelling with a caravan or camper van.

Best-rated in this area: Apartaments Fincasol, with a score of 7.9 from 148 reviews.

Torroella de Montgrí

The municipal capital lies a few kilometres inland, on the banks of the Ter and below the castle. It has an arcaded square, the church of Sant Genís and the Museu de la Mediterrània in Can Quintana. At night dinner is relaxed and town life goes on all year, not just in summer. It suits those with a car who want to combine the sea, trips around the Empordà and the walk up to the castle.
