What to see in La Seu d'Urgell

Must-sees

La Seu d'Urgell is the capital of the Alt Urgell district and the seat of a thousand-year-old bishopric. Its bishop is also co-prince of Andorra. The great visit is the 12th-century cathedral of Santa Maria, considered the only complete Romanesque cathedral in Catalonia. Do not miss its cloister and the Museu Diocesà, which holds the Beatus of Liébana manuscript known as the Beatus of Urgell. Next to it is the small church of Sant Miquel.

The old town is quickly explored. Carrer dels Canonges, with its arcades, is the most characteristic street, and nearby you will find old mills and noble houses. By the river is the Parc del Segre, built for the white-water canoeing events of the 1992 Olympic Games and now a green and sports area. Above the city, the Castellciutat district offers good views of the valley.

Free tours and guided visits

Pay-what-you-like free walking tours are hard to find in La Seu d'Urgell. The usual options are guided visits to the cathedral complex, including the church, the cloister and the museum, and routes around the historic centre explaining the history of the bishopric and its link with Andorra. Check at the tourist office.

Many excursions into the Pyrenees start from here. You can do guided hikes in the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, rafting or canoeing on the Segre and trips to Andorra, about ten kilometres away. There are also visits to mountain villages and Romanesque churches around the district.

How long to spend

A full day is enough for the city. In the morning visit the cathedral, the cloister and the museum, and in the afternoon stroll around the old town and the Parc del Segre. If you like the mountains, stay two or three days: one for a route in the Cadí, another for river activities and another for Andorra or the nearby valleys.

Where to stay

The best place to sleep is the centre, around the old town and Carrer dels Canonges. From there you can walk to the cathedral and have the restaurants close by. If you prefer peace and views, Castellciutat, up on the hill, is a good option. If your plan includes lots of mountains, you can also stay in villages around the district and use the city as a base for shopping and meals.
