What to see in El Port de la Selva

Must-sees

El Port de la Selva is a seafaring village in the Alt Empordà, on the northern side of Cap de Creus. It has whitewashed houses facing an open bay, a fishing harbour that is still active and a pleasant seafront promenade. Coastal paths lead from the village to small rocky coves with clear water, within the Cap de Creus nature park.

On the mountain above the bay stands the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, one of the great Romanesque complexes of Catalonia, with sweeping views over the sea. Higher up are the ruins of the castle of Sant Salvador de Verdera. La Selva de Mar, the old inland village, keeps its stone core. Nearby are Llançà, Cadaqués and Figueres, with the Dalí Theatre-Museum.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in El Port de la Selva. The most interesting options are guided visits to the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes and outings in the nature park: walks across Cap de Creus, boat trips along the coast, and kayaking and snorkelling in the coves. Cadaqués and Figueres have more guided walks, focused on the towns and on Dalí.

How long to spend

One day is enough for the village and Sant Pere de Rodes. Ideally, allow three or four days: one for the monastery and La Selva de Mar, another for the coves and the coastal path, one by boat or kayak around Cap de Creus and another for Cadaqués and Figueres.

Where to stay

The most convenient option is to stay near the harbour or the seafront, with the water and restaurants a few steps away. In summer it's worth booking early, as there isn't much accommodation. To explore the area by car, Llançà is an alternative with more places to stay and a train station. If you prefer peace and quiet, La Selva de Mar has a few rural houses.
