What to see in Blanes

Must-sees

Blanes is the first town on the Costa Brava coming from the south, and the rock of Sa Palomera, next to the harbour, symbolically marks that start. From there you can see the whole seafront and the fishing harbour, which is still very active. On top of Sant Joan hill stands the castle of the same name, with a tower and excellent views. In the old town, the church of Santa María and a Gothic fountain stand out.

The gardens are Blanes' big attraction. The Marimurtra Botanical Garden, on a cliff, gathers plants from all over the world and has a much-photographed temple facing the sea. Very close by is the Pinya de Rosa garden, with an important cactus collection. If you go in July, the international fireworks competition fills the bay with people every night. The coves of Sant Francesc and Santa Anna are good for swimming.

Free tours and guided visits

In high season you may find a free tour in Blanes, covering the old town, the harbour and Sa Palomera, paid by tips. More common, though, are guided visits to the gardens and excursions. The boats running along the coast to Lloret and Tossa de Mar are very popular. There are also day trips to Girona, Barcelona and Montserrat, and kayak routes around the coves.

How long to spend

In one day you can see the main sights of Blanes: the gardens in the morning, a walk around the centre and harbour, and a climb to the castle for sunset. If you stay two or three days, combine the beach with a boat trip to Tossa and a day in Girona. Barcelona is just over an hour away by train, so you can also give it a full day.

Where to stay

The seafront and centre are the most practical area: the beach, harbour, restaurants and bus station are all within walking distance. S'Abanell beach, further south, has many hotels and apartments and is convenient for families, although it is a little further from the old town. If you travel by train, the station is outside the centre, so choose accommodation with good bus links.
