What to see in Begur

Must-sees

Begur is a Costa Brava village built on a hill, with the castle at the top. From the ruins of the fortress there is a wide view of the coast and the Empordà inland. In the old town the highlights are the defence towers against pirates and the houses of the indianos, built by locals who made their fortune in Cuba in the 19th century. Their colonial façades give the village a character of its own.

The other big reason to come is the coves. Sa Tuna, Aiguafreda, Sa Riera, Aiguablava and Fornells are all in the municipality and have clear water surrounded by pines and rock. Many can be linked by the coastal path, a seaside trail with stretches of steps and open views. A few kilometres away are medieval villages such as Pals and Peratallada, very easy to combine with the beach.

Free tours and guided visits

Begur does not usually have regular free walking tours, although in season there are guided walks around the old town focused on the indiano houses and the history of the pirates. Trips from the village are more usual. You can do guided walks along the coastal path, kayak trips around the coves and snorkelling along the coast. Another interesting option is a day trip around the medieval villages of the Baix Empordà, with Pals and Peratallada as the main stops.

How long to spend

You need a day to get to know Begur and a couple of coves. Spend the morning climbing to the castle and exploring the old town, and the afternoon going down to a cove or walking a stretch of the coastal path. With two or three days you can see several coves without rushing, go kayaking and visit the medieval villages inland. In summer get up early, because the cove car parks fill up quickly.

Where to stay

If you want to get around the village on foot, stay in Begur old town, where the restaurants, shops and evening life are. To be by the sea, look for places near Aiguablava, Sa Riera or Sa Tuna, although there is less choice and it is worth having a car to get up to the centre. In July and August demand is very high, so book ahead.
