Where to stay in Moguer: the best areas

Plaza del Cabildo and the centre

Plaza del Cabildo, with the arcaded town hall, is the starting point for exploring Moguer. Staying in the streets around it puts the church of Nuestra Señora de la Granada, the bars and the shops of the centre within walking distance.

On the walls you will see tiles with passages from «Platero and I», forming a literary trail around the town. It is the area for getting to know Moguer on foot, without the car. In the evening, the terraces on the square are the town’s meeting point.

Santa Clara and the house museum

Moguer’s most monumental side is concentrated around the Santa Clara monastery and the Zenobia and Juan Ramón Jiménez House Museum. The monastery keeps the memory of the vow Columbus made on returning from his first voyage. The streets are quiet, whitewashed and flat, comfortable for all ages. If you are interested in the poet, almost everything is a few steps away here, including his birthplace.

The outskirts and Fuentepiña

Around the town spread fields of crops and strawberries, with rural cottages and roomy places to stay. On the outskirts is Fuentepiña, the estate where, by tradition, Platero the donkey is buried. It is an option for families or groups with a car looking for easy parking and some garden. In spring, with the fields in full harvest, the landscape changes completely.

Palos and La Rábida as an alternative

If your main interest is the Columbus sites, you can split your stay with Palos de la Frontera, home to the church of San Jorge. Very close are the La Rábida monastery and the Muelle de las Carabelas, with replicas of Columbus’s ships.

From Moguer it is a short drive, and Mazagón beach comes next. That way you combine history in the morning with the sea in the afternoon.
