Centre and Plaza Alta

Plaza Alta is Algeciras’s meeting point, with its tiled fountain and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Palma. Around it are shopping streets, tapas bars and the Mercado de Abastos, the work of engineer Eduardo Torroja, with its concrete dome. The María Cristina park, a green breather amid the traffic, is also close.

It is the area that works best if you are spending a night or two in the city and want to go out for dinner. From here you can walk down to the port, so it also suits you if you are crossing the Strait the next day.

Best-rated in this area: Suittes Hotel, with a score of 8.1 from 3,897 reviews.

The port and ferry terminal

The port of Algeciras has frequent sailings to Ceuta and Tanger Med. If you are crossing the Strait early, sleeping near the ferry terminal saves you an early start and queues at the entrance. This area also has the railway station, at the end of the line from Ronda and Bobadilla, and the San Bernardo bus station.

It is the area preferred by travellers in transit and people working with the port. There is more traffic and lorry movement, so don’t expect calm.

El Rinconcillo

North of the city, El Rinconcillo beach is wide, with a promenade looking across the bay to the Rock of Gibraltar. It has beach bars, terraces and a neighbourhood feel. It suits you if you are combining work or transit with some beach time and prefer something quieter than the centre.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Mirador, with a score of 7.7 from 1,264 reviews.

Getares

To the south, Getares beach lies outside the city, in a cove open to the Strait. There are housing estates and beach restaurants, and the atmosphere is more holiday than city. To get to the centre or the port you will need a car or the city bus.
