Plaza de España and the Encarnación

The centre of the village revolves around the Plaza de España, with the town hall and the round church of the Encarnación. Here are the tapas bars, the bakery and the few shops. The streets are less steep than in the upper part and parking is easier nearby. It is the most comfortable area for older people or for anyone arriving with children who wants everything close at hand. In the evening the square is where neighbours meet and the best place to feel the village's pulse.

Upper quarter, below La Villa

The white houses climbing towards the crag crowned by La Villa form the most photogenic corner of Montefrío. Staying in these streets lets you climb to the hilltop enclosure before anyone else and come down to dinner without the car. The rural houses usually have terraces with views over the olive groves and the San Sebastián crag.

Bear in mind that the slopes are steep and some alleys are closed to cars. Ask where to park before you arrive and travel light.

At night, with La Villa lit up above the rooftops, the effort is well worth it.

Farmhouses among the olive groves

The countryside around the village is dotted with cortijos and restored farmhouses, many with a pool and fireplace. From some of them you get a view of Montefrío similar to the one from the viewpoint on the approach road. They are ideal for groups, families and anyone wanting a rest. They also put you closer to the Peña de los Gitanos. You will need a car, and it is worth asking about the state of the access track. In autumn and winter you will see the olive harvest up close.
