Where to stay in Guadix: the best areas

Cathedral and Plaza de la Constitución

Everything you will visit in Guadix revolves around the cathedral. Beside it, the arcaded Plaza de la Constitución, presided over by the town hall, has bars that still serve a free tapa with your drink. Staying here puts the Palacio de Peñaflor, the church of Santiago and the alcazaba a few steps away. It is the best choice if you are coming to see the monuments and would rather not move the car all day. At night the floodlit old town is a pleasant walk.

Best-rated in this area: Palacete Magistral Domínguez habitaciones, with a score of 9.3 from 137 reviews.

Cave quarter

Behind the centre, the Ermita Nueva district and the nearby hills are dotted with white chimneys. Here renovated caves are rented as apartments, with living room, kitchen and bedrooms dug into the earth. The temperature stays steady all year and at night silence reigns. It is very popular with families and those wanting a different kind of stay. The streets are steep with no pavements, and the centre is close but uphill on the way back.

Station area and access roads

The modern part, towards the railway station and the A-92 motorway exits, has wide avenues, shops and more functional places to stay. It suits you if you are passing through towards Almería or Granada, travelling for work or arriving on the Granada–Almería train and want to rest without hauling suitcases up slopes.

Purullena

A few kilometres away, Purullena is another cave village, with ceramics shops along the road and cave homes for rent. It is a quiet alternative for combining Guadix with the Geopark and the badlands nearby. It lies next to the motorway to Granada, which makes driving out easy, and has home-cooking restaurants for dinner without going back to Guadix.
