Where to stay in Zuheros: the best areas

Old town by the castle

The white lanes around the fortress and the viewpoint are the prettiest part of the village. If you stay here, you step outside and within a minute you're looking out over the gorge and the olive groves. Rural houses often have courtyards, fireplaces and views over the countryside. It works well for couples and those coming to rest, though you'll be hauling your case up hills.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Zuhayra, with a score of 9.0 from 1,102 reviews.

Village entrance and the Vía Verde

In the lower part, by the access road, you'll find places to stay with parking nearby, which is handy as there's little space inside the old town. The trail through the Bailón canyon starts here and, a little further down, the Vía Verde del Aceite runs past, a greenway you can cycle or walk among the olive trees. Cyclists and hikers appreciate having their gear to hand and setting off without moving the car.

Doña Mencía

A few kilometres away, Doña Mencía is larger, with more shops, bars and services. It keeps the remains of its castle and a wine-making tradition within the Montilla-Moriles appellation. The Vía Verde del Aceite crosses the town and links it to Zuheros. It's a reasonable alternative if Zuheros is full or if you're travelling in a large group looking for big houses.

Luque

To the east, Luque huddles beneath its castle, with the church of La Asunción at the top. It gets fewer visitors than Zuheros and keeps a very local feel, with bars where the villagers eat. From here you can drive to the Cueva de los Murciélagos and Priego de Córdoba. It suits those who want to explore the Subbética slowly and by car. Prices tend to be lower and it's easier to find a room on long weekends.
