Where to stay in El Rocío: the best areas

Around the Sanctuary

Sleeping a few steps from the shrine lets you see it white and empty at dawn, before the coaches arrive. Around the sanctuary are the largest brotherhood houses, a few bars with terraces and shops selling souvenirs and pilgrimage items. It is the area with the most services in the village, although do not expect much: El Rocío lives at a different pace outside the festivities, and many houses stay closed for weeks. During the Pentecost pilgrimage, by contrast, the village fills completely and almost everything is booked far in advance.

Paseo Marismeño

The Paseo Marismeño runs along the waterside edge of the village, facing the marsh. From windows overlooking the marsh you can see flamingos and horses without leaving your room when the marsh is flooded. It is the choice for photography and birdwatching fans, who get up early to catch the first light. In summer the water shrinks a lot, so the landscape changes with the season.

Best-rated in this area: Hostal Rural La Fonda Del Rocio, with a score of 8.5 from 1,529 reviews.

Sandy streets and the Ajolí bridge

To the north and west, the sandy streets are lined with houses with porches and horse yards. Here there are more whole houses to rent, useful for groups or families staying several days. At the edge of the village is the Ajolí bridge, over the Rocina stream, the traditional crossing for the brotherhoods. Wear closed shoes: the sand gets everywhere.

Matalascañas road

Some rural places to stay and estates are by the road to Matalascañas. From there you are very close to the La Rocina visitor centre and, a little further, the Palacio del Acebrón, surrounded by trails among pines and lagoons. You need a car, but the village is a step away. It also suits you if you are combining El Rocío with Matalascañas beach or a 4x4 trip through Doñana.
