Where to stay in Baeza: the best areas

Monumental quarter

The upper part of Baeza holds almost all its Renaissance heritage. Here are the cathedral, the Jabalquinto Palace, Plaza del Pópulo with its Fountain of the Lions, and the old university where Antonio Machado taught. The cobbled streets fall silent in the evening, and from the Paseo de las Murallas you look out over the Guadalquivir valley, covered in olive trees as far as Sierra Mágina.

It is the area for couples and for anyone who wants to take in the stone city at a slow pace. Many streets are narrow and some have restricted traffic, so check where to leave the car.

Paseo de la Constitución

This long promenade, with Plaza de España at one end, is the social heart of Baeza. It has terraces, cafés and tapas bars, and the streets up to the town hall and the monumental quarter start from here. It suits you if you like going out for dinner and drinks in the evening, and also if you travel with children, because the ground here is flat.

San Andrés quarter

To the east, around the church of San Andrés, the town becomes more working-class, with whitewashed houses and long-time residents. There are few tourists and the centre is a stroll away. It suits those looking for a whole house or an apartment for several days.

Outskirts and olive groves

Around Baeza there are farmhouses and rural houses among the olive trees, with pools and outdoor space. They are an option for families and travellers with a car who want to combine Baeza with Úbeda, a few kilometres away, or head to the Sierra de Cazorla. In summer the pool is welcome, because the heat in this area is fierce and the streets of the old town have little shade at midday.
