Old town by the Tajo

Alhama's old quarter stands above the gorge carved by the river. Here are the church of La Encarnación, the Hospital de la Reina, the Caja del Agua and the narrow streets of the old Moorish quarter. It is the liveliest part of town and the best choice for a weekend. Staying here lets you look out from the viewpoints over the canyon at dusk and have dinner in the bars of the centre without taking the car.

Town entrance and newer area

The streets coming in on the Granada road and around the newer avenues have roomier houses, street parking and everyday shops. The old town is within walking distance. It suits those arriving with a loaded car or staying several days to explore the area.

Spa and the Alhama river

Downstream, on the outskirts, the spa uses hot springs already enjoyed by the Moors; the old Arab bath is preserved inside. This is the area for switching off and taking the waters. There are hardly any other services around it, so for tapas you will need to go up into town. Further up, in the Tajos, a path follows the river past old mills.

Los Bermejales and Arenas del Rey

To the east, the Los Bermejales reservoir has freshwater beaches, swimming areas and activities such as canoeing in summer. The villages around it, such as Arenas del Rey, have rural houses and campsites. It is an option for families in summer who want water nearby without driving down to the coast, always by car.

Sierra de Tejeda

To the south, the municipality extends into the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park. The farmhouses and isolated houses in this part attract hikers and those seeking total silence. Access tracks may be unpaved, so ask before you arrive.
