Cathedral and Plaza de Santa María

The area around the cathedral is the most monumental part of Jaén. In front of you is Plaza de Santa María, with the town hall and the Bishop’s Palace, and a few steps away the tapas streets, such as the Arco del Consuelo area and Calle Cerón, where a tapa comes free with your drink. It is the most convenient option for a first weekend visit, because you can do everything on foot.

La Magdalena and San Juan

North of the cathedral begin the city’s oldest districts. Along Calle Maestra you reach the Villardompardo Palace, which holds the Arab baths, and higher up the church of La Magdalena and its fountain, the Raudal. The streets are narrow, steep and quiet at night. They suit you if you want a neighbourhood feel and do not mind parking a little further away.

Plaza de la Constitución and the station

Plaza de la Constitución is Jaén’s shopping hub, where the busiest shopping streets meet. From here the Paseo de la Estación runs down, a long straight avenue ending at the train station. It is a flat area with plenty of services, practical if you arrive by train or bus or are travelling for work.

From the square you can walk up to the old town, while Santa Catalina castle sits on top of the hill, better reached by car or taxi.

El Bulevar

El Bulevar is the modern area in the north of the city, with wide avenues, new buildings and easier parking.
