Where to stay in Antequera: the best areas

Centre and Calle Infante Don Fernando

Calle Infante Don Fernando crosses the centre and links Plaza de San Sebastián with the shopping area. Around it are the Coso Viejo, where the Nájera Palace houses the City Museum, Baroque churches on every corner and bars where you can order porra or mollete. Staying here lets you do almost all your sightseeing on foot and go out to dinner without watching the clock. It is the natural choice if you come without a car. Buses arriving in town stop nearby, and many streets in the centre are pedestrianised or have little traffic.

Upper town by the Alcazaba

The streets climbing from the centre to the Collegiate Church of Santa María and the Arco de los Gigantes are the oldest and steepest in Antequera. At night they are silent and, from the viewpoints, you can see the plain and the outline of the Peña de los Enamorados. There are few places to stay, mostly small houses. Parking is difficult and the slopes are tiring, so travel light.

Alameda de Andalucía and the Bullring

The area around the Alameda de Andalucía and the Bullring is flatter and more modern, with wide avenues, shops and terraces. It is still close to the old town, but traffic is easier and there are more places to leave the car. It works well for families and stays of several days. In the evening the Alameda fills with locals out for a stroll and a drink, and from here it is a short walk up to the old town.

Best-rated in this area: Parador de Antequera, with a score of 8.6 from 1,681 reviews.

The road out to the Dolmens

The Menga and Viera dolmens are on the way out of town towards Granada. In that area and along the access roads there are large hotels with parking and pools. They are convenient for exploring the region: El Torcal, the Fuente de Piedra lagoon or the Caminito del Rey. To reach the centre, though, you will have a fair walk or need the car.
