What to see in Zuheros

Must-sees

Zuheros is a white village in the Subbética area of Córdoba, perched on a limestone outcrop. Its castle, Moorish in origin with Renaissance additions, looks over a gorge with views of the olive groves. Beside it are the church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios and the Mirador de la Villa, one of the best places to watch the sunset.

A few kilometres away, up a winding road, is the Cueva de los Murciélagos, with Neolithic remains and schematic paintings. For walking, the Bailón river canyon trail starts from the village itself. Zuheros is part of the Sierras Subbéticas Nature Park and is known for its goat's cheese, which you can try in the village.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Zuheros. Guided visits are the norm: the Cueva de los Murciélagos can only be visited with a guide and booking is advisable, and the castle and the archaeological museum also have organised visits. For excursions, the Bailón canyon trails, the nearby stretch of the Vía Verde del Aceite and trips to Priego de Córdoba or Baena are worthwhile.

How long to spend

Two or three hours are enough for the village, the castle and the viewpoint. If you add the Cueva de los Murciélagos, which requires booking, allow a full day. With two days you can also walk the Bailón canyon and visit Priego de Córdoba, with its Baroque churches and its Villa quarter, less than half an hour's drive away.

Where to stay

The best option is to stay in Zuheros itself, in the old town or by the access road, where there are small hotels and rural houses. At night the village is very quiet, and in the morning you can head out walking without the car. If you can't find a room, Luque, Doña Mencía and Priego de Córdoba have more on offer and are close by.
