What to see in El Rocío

Must-sees

El Rocío is a village belonging to Almonte that looks like nowhere else. Its streets are sand, the houses have porches and rails for tying up horses, and many belong to pilgrimage brotherhoods. In the centre rises the intensely white Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora del Rocío, which receives visitors all year round.

In front of the village stretches the Doñana marsh. The waterside walk is the best place to see flamingos, herons, spoonbills and grazing horses, especially in winter and spring, when there is more water. The pilgrimage is held at Pentecost and draws hundreds of thousands of people; outside those dates, the atmosphere is very quiet.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours in El Rocío. The usual options are guided visits and trips into Doñana leaving from the village or nearby visitor centres. The best known are the 4x4 routes through the national park, crossing dunes, pine forest and marshland with authorised guides.

You can also visit the La Rocina centre and the Palacio del Acebrón on your own or with a guide, with trails and bird hides. Other options are horse rides around the village and birdwatching routes with binoculars. Many visitors combine the day with Matalascañas or the Columbus sites.

How long to spend

Two or three hours are enough for the village and the sanctuary. If you want to take a trip into Doñana, allow a full day. Ideally spend a night to see the marsh at dawn and dusk, when most wildlife is about. Bring binoculars, and warm clothes in winter.

Where to stay

The most rewarding option is to sleep in the village itself, near the sanctuary or the marsh promenade. That way you see the first and last light and can walk out to watch birds. Choice is limited and sells out during the pilgrimage and some weekends. As an alternative, Almonte and Matalascañas have more places to stay and are a few minutes away by car.
