What to see in Casares

Must-sees

Casares sits on a hill in the Serranía de Ronda, looking out to the Mediterranean. The top of the village is taken up by the remains of the Moorish fortress and the church of the Encarnación, next to the cemetery, from where on clear days you can see Gibraltar and the coast of Africa. The climb through narrow white streets is already part of the visit.

In the Plaza de España stands the Carlos III fountain, the village's meeting point. Nearby is the house where Blas Infante was born, now a centre devoted to him. In the surroundings, the Sierra Crestellina stands out, a nature area with trails and vulture colonies, and towards the coast are the Baños de la Hedionda, old sulphurous springs.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are rare in Casares. The usual option is a guided visit to the old town, the fortress and the Blas Infante house, often included in trips from the Costa del Sol that combine several white villages. For walkers, there are guided routes in the Sierra Crestellina, and outings to Ronda and Gaucín are also organised from here.

How long to spend

Casares can be seen well in half a day: about three or four hours to climb to the fortress, go into the church and the Blas Infante house and have lunch in the village. If you want to walk in the Sierra Crestellina, set aside a full day. Many visitors combine it with an afternoon on the coast or at the Baños de la Hedionda.

Where to stay

To get to know the village at leisure, it is best to sleep in the village itself, near the Plaza de España. In the evening, once the groups leave, the atmosphere changes completely. If you would rather combine it with the beach, the Casares Costa area has hotels and apartments by the sea, about twenty minutes' drive from the village.
