What to see in Níjar

Must-sees

The municipality of Níjar covers much of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Nature Park. The village, at the foot of the Sierra Alhamilla, is known for its pottery and jarapas, rag rugs still made in workshops in the potters' quarter. Worth a visit are the church of Santa María de la Anunciación, with its Mudéjar ceiling, the Plaza del Mercado and the watchtower, with views over the plain.

The coast is the main reason to come. San José, Las Negras, La Isleta del Moro and Agua Amarga are white villages by the sea, and between them lie beaches such as Mónsul, Los Genoveses and the San Pedro cove. Rodalquilar keeps the buildings of its old gold mines, and inland the Cortijo del Fraile recalls the story that inspired Lorca.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are rare in Níjar. The norm is guided activities in the nature park: kayak routes along the cliffs, snorkelling in the coves, boat trips along the coast and 4x4 excursions through the volcanic landscapes. There are also guided visits to the Rodalquilar mines and pottery workshops in the village, where you can see clay being worked.

How long to spend

Half a morning is enough for the village of Níjar. The park, however, needs at least three or four days: one for San José and its beaches, another for Rodalquilar and Las Negras, another for Agua Amarga and one more for an activity at sea. In summer, access to the best-known beaches is limited, so check before you go.

Where to stay

San José is the most complete base: it has more accommodation and restaurants and quick access to Mónsul and Los Genoveses. Agua Amarga and Las Negras are smaller and quieter, good for those seeking rest. Staying in Níjar village is cheaper and more authentic, but it's far from the coast and means driving every day.
