What to see in Segura de la Sierra

Must-sees

Segura de la Sierra is one of the highest villages in the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Nature Park. It is crowned by its restored castle, Moorish in origin, with an interpretation centre and a tower that overlooks much of the sierra. The climb up from the village already has good views.

The old town holds the well-preserved Arab baths and the church of Nuestra Señora del Collado. The bullring stands out, partly carved into the rock and irregular in shape. Nearby is the Fuente Imperial, from the time of Charles V, and the house tradition links to the poet Jorge Manrique. The streets are steep and quiet.

Free tours and guided visits

Free walking tours are not common in Segura de la Sierra. Guided visits to the castle and the Arab baths are the most practical way to learn its history. Excursions into the nature park are organised from here: hikes, 4x4 trips, watching wildlife such as deer and ibex, and visits to the Tranco reservoir or the source of the Guadalquivir.

How long to spend

Three or four hours are enough for the village: the castle in the morning, then the Arab baths, the bullring and the church. If you want to explore the park, allow at least three days, as distances on mountain roads are long. A good split is one day for Segura and Hornos, another for the Tranco and another for the Cazorla area.

Where to stay

Staying in Segura de la Sierra lets you see the village without visitors and enjoy its sunset views. There are rural houses and a small hotel or two in the old town. Below, Orcera has more services and shops and is a few minutes away. If you plan to explore the park thoroughly, staying near the Tranco reservoir cuts down the driving.
