What to see in El Rompido

Must-sees

El Rompido is a seafaring village in the municipality of Cartaya, at the mouth of the river Piedras. Its landscape is defined by the Flecha de El Rompido, a long tongue of sand that separates the river from the sea and is part of a protected natural area. The fishing harbour, with its boats, and the riverside promenade are the centre of village life.

On a small hill stands the lighthouse, from the late 19th century, with good views of the river and the spit. The main beach is on the other side of the water: in season boats cross to the Flecha, where there are kilometres of sand with almost no buildings. To the west is Nueva Umbría beach, and to the east El Portil and its lagoon.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free tours as such in El Rompido. The usual activities are in nature: kayak or paddleboard routes along the river Piedras, boat trips along the Flecha and birdwatching outings. As a guided excursion, it is worth visiting the Columbus sites, with the monastery of La Rábida and the Wharf of the Caravels, or booking a visit to the Doñana area.

How long to spend

Three or four hours are enough to see the village, the lighthouse and the harbour. What needs more time is the Flecha: give it at least a day, between the boat crossing, the beach and a walk along the river. With a long weekend you can add a kayak outing and a trip to the Columbus sites or the city of Huelva.

Where to stay

The most practical option is to stay in the village itself, near the harbour, where the restaurants and the jetty to the Flecha are. That way you can do almost everything on foot. Around it are developments and complexes next to the golf course, quieter and with pools, but from there you depend on the car to get down to the harbour, especially at night.
