What to see in Grazalema

Must-sees

Grazalema is one of the white villages of the Cádiz mountains and the centre of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. Wander its steep streets of whitewashed houses and window grilles up to Plaza de España, with its fountain and the church of La Aurora. From the village viewpoints you can see the valley and the limestone walls that surround it.

The village has a textile tradition, and Grazalema blankets, made of wool in bright colours, are still produced. But what draws most people is the mountains. The park protects one of the best-known Spanish fir forests in the peninsula, as well as gorges such as the Garganta Verde. Nearby are Zahara de la Sierra, with its reservoir, and Benamahoma, with the river source.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours as such in Grazalema. The norm is guided mountain hikes with a mountain guide and village visits with a local guide who explains its history and crafts. Some trails, such as the fir forest or the Garganta Verde, require a park permit, best requested in advance. Canyoning, climbing and caving are also organised, as well as excursions along the white villages route, including Zahara, Ubrique and Setenil.

How long to spend

Two or three relaxed hours are enough for the village, with time for the viewpoints and a meal. If you are coming for nature, allow at least two days: one for a long mountain route and another for nearby villages such as Zahara or Benamahoma. It is one of the rainiest areas in Spain, so check the weather before setting out.

Where to stay

The best option is to sleep in the village itself, in guesthouses, small hotels or rural cottages. That way you can set off early for the trails and enjoy the atmosphere after the day visitors leave. If you want more choice, El Bosque, Zahara de la Sierra or Ubrique are close by. At weekends and on long weekends, book ahead, as the supply is small.
