What to see in Agua Amarga

Must-sees

Agua Amarga is a small village of white houses at the northern end of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. Its town beach, with sand and clear water, takes up almost the entire seafront and is the centre of daily life. Nearby are the remains of the old ore-loading pier, from when iron came here by rail from the mountains.

The best is in the nearby coves. Cala de Enmedio, reached on foot, has white rocks shaped by wind and water. Cala del Plomo, reached by a dirt track, is wide and quiet. To the north, the Mesa Roldán lighthouse and tower give views of the whole coast. A short drive away are Carboneras, Rodalquilar with its old gold mines, and Níjar, known for its pottery and rag rugs.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free tours in Agua Amarga: the village is small and easy to explore alone. Guided nature activities are the norm here. The most recommended are kayak and snorkelling trips along the park’s coast, boat trips to see the cliffs and coves from the sea and guided hikes on the coastal paths. There are also guided visits to the Rodalquilar mining area and 4x4 trips through the volcanic interior.

How long to spend

The village takes an hour or two, but deserves more time. With two or three days you can combine the beach, a walk to Cala de Enmedio, a sea activity and a visit to Rodalquilar or Níjar. To see all of Cabo de Gata, allow four or five days.

Where to stay

The best choice is to sleep in the village itself, near the beach, to walk everywhere and enjoy the calm at night. There are few places and in summer they fill early, so book ahead. If you cannot find a room, Carboneras is very close with more options, although less atmosphere. Bear in mind you will need a car to get around the park.
