What to see in Huelva

Must-sees

Huelva’s past is tied to mining and the British presence. The best example is the Muelle del Tinto, an old iron-ore loading pier over the estuary, ideal for a sunset stroll. The Reina Victoria district, known as the Barrio Obrero, was built for the mining company’s workers and has English-style houses. The Casa Colón, a former hotel, is another building from that era.

In the centre are the cathedral of La Merced and Plaza de las Monjas, the city’s meeting point. The Museum of Huelva has a good archaeological collection. On the heights, the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Cinta has links with Columbus. On Punta del Sebo stands the Monument to the Faith of the Discoverers, facing the Odiel marshes.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours cover the centre, Plaza de las Monjas, the cathedral, the Barrio Obrero and the Muelle del Tinto, with plenty of mining and Columbus history. They are tip-based. There is less on offer than in other Andalusian capitals, so check ahead. Excursions are the strong point. Very close are the Columbus sites: the monastery of La Rábida, the Wharf of the Caravels, Palos de la Frontera and Moguer. There are also guided trips to Doñana, the Rio Tinto mines and the Sierra de Aracena.

How long to spend

One day is enough for the city. Spend the morning on the centre and the museum, and the afternoon on the Barrio Obrero and the Muelle del Tinto. If you add a second day, visit the Columbus sites, a few kilometres away. With three or four days you can add Doñana, Rio Tinto or a beach day on the Huelva coast.

Where to stay

The centre, around Plaza de las Monjas and the Gran Vía, is the best area for getting around on foot, with the cathedral, shops and tapas bars nearby. From here it is also easy to reach the Barrio Obrero. If your plan includes the beach, you can stay in Punta Umbría, a short drive away, and visit the city on a day trip.
