What to see in Torrox

Must-sees

Torrox has two sides: the village, inland, and the coast, a few kilometres away. Torrox Pueblo is white with steep streets, centred on Plaza de la Constitución. Nearby are the church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación and the former convent of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves. From the viewpoints you can see the valley covered in orchards and tropical fruit trees.

In Torrox Costa, next to the lighthouse, Roman remains survive: a villa, baths, a necropolis and pottery kilns. It is a short, little-known visit. The promenade links beaches such as Ferrara and El Morche, comfortable for swimming. Very close by are Nerja, with its cave and the Balcón de Europa, and Frigiliana, one of the most visited villages in the Axarquía.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours are scarce in Torrox and the usual thing is to explore it on your own. The most interesting guided visits head into the surroundings: Nerja Cave with a guide, routes around Frigiliana and tours of the Axarquía, which usually combine white villages, Muscatel vineyards and raisin-making. For walkers, there are guided hikes in the Sierra de Almijara.

How long to spend

One day is enough to see Torrox Pueblo and the Roman remains on the coast, ideally starting with the village early in the morning, when it is cooler. To get to know the area, allow three or four days: one for Torrox, one for Nerja and Frigiliana, and the rest for the beach or a hike in the mountains.

Where to stay

For getting around the area, Torrox Costa is the most convenient option: there is more accommodation, more services and transport, and you are right by the beach. The stretch near the lighthouse and the Ferrara promenade keeps the Roman remains close at hand. If you prefer peace and a village atmosphere, Torrox Pueblo has rural houses and apartments, although you will need a car to get down to the coast.
