What to see in Vejer de la Frontera

Must-sees

Vejer sits on a hilltop a few kilometres from the coast, and its historic centre keeps much of its wall. Enter through the Arco de la Segur or the Arco de la Villa and wander the white streets. Visit the castle, the church of the Divino Salvador and the Arco de las Monjas, with its buttresses spanning the street.

Plaza de España, known locally as the Plaza de los Pescaítos, has a tiled fountain surrounded by palm trees. Look for the figure of the cobijada, the woman wearing the village’s traditional cloak. On the outskirts are the windmills, a good spot for sunset. For the beach, Caños de Meca and El Palmar are about fifteen minutes away by car.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours are not common in Vejer. More usual are guided visits to the historic centre, explaining the wall, the Moorish past and local traditions, and nature excursions in the area. The old town is small, but with a guide you will discover details that go unnoticed, such as patios and corners of the wall.

Outside the village, routes through La Breña and Marismas del Barbate Natural Park, with cliffs and pine woods above the sea, and trips to Cape Trafalgar are worthwhile. From Vejer it is also easy to organise visits to Baelo Claudia, Cádiz or a sherry bodega in Jerez. If you are interested in food, there are cooking workshops and gastronomic routes.

How long to spend

The village can be seen in half a day, three or four hours strolling at leisure and visiting the church and castle. If you stay for dinner or the night, you will see Vejer at its quietest, after the day visitors leave. To combine it with beaches and nature, allow two or three days and use the village as a base.

Where to stay

It is best to sleep inside the historic centre, in a restored house or a small hotel. You will be close to everything and the streets are silent at night. Bear in mind that many streets are steep and you cannot park inside, so travel light. If you want the beach, La Barca de Vejer, below the village, or the Caños de Meca coast are other options.
