What to see in Almuñécar

Must-sees

Almuñécar is one of the most historic towns on the Costa Tropical. Start at San Miguel castle, at the top of the old town, with views of the sea and the beaches. Close by is the Cueva de Siete Palacios, a Roman structure that now houses the archaeology museum. In El Majuelo park are the remains of a Roman fish-salting factory.

San Cristóbal and Puerta del Mar beaches lie either side of the Peñón del Santo, a viewpoint over the water. There is also a stretch of Roman aqueduct in the area. A few kilometres away, La Herradura has a calm bay with seabeds much prized by divers, and Marina del Este is a small marina between cliffs.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours are rare in Almuñécar. The usual option is a guided walk around the old town linking the castle, the Cueva de Siete Palacios and the Roman remains, often telling the story of Abd al-Rahman I, who landed here in the 8th century. Among paid activities, kayak or boat trips along the cliffs and diving at La Herradura and Marina del Este are worthwhile. Granada, with the Alhambra, and the Alpujarra are highly recommended day trips.

How long to spend

A long half day is enough for the castle, the museum and the old town. With a full day you can add El Majuelo, the Peñón del Santo and a walk along the beach. If you are on holiday, four or five days let you combine the beach, a day at La Herradura with an activity at sea and a trip to Granada.

Where to stay

The centre, between the old town and Puerta del Mar or San Cristóbal beach, is the most practical area, with the monuments, restaurants and beach on foot. If you want a quieter, family atmosphere, La Herradura is a good alternative, with its bay and promenade. To move between the two or take excursions, a car makes things much easier.
