What to see in Torre del Mar

Must-sees

Torre del Mar is the coastal part of Vélez-Málaga and one of the most popular beach destinations in the Axarquía. Its promenade is long and lively, with beach bars, terraces and a modern lighthouse. The beaches are wide, with dark sand, and suitable for families. The chimney of the old sugar mill still stands in the town, a reminder of a past tied to sugar cane.

A few kilometres inland is Vélez-Málaga, the main town of the area. Its old town climbs up to the Fortaleza, with views of the coast, and keeps the church of Santa María la Mayor and streets with a Moorish layout. It is worth a visit if you are spending several days in the area.

Free tours and guided visits

Free tours are not usual in Torre del Mar. Most people use it as a base for trips and guided visits around the Axarquía. Vélez-Málaga sometimes runs pay-what-you-wish or town-organised walks through the historic centre and the Fortaleza. In Málaga city, on the other hand, free tours are frequent.

Among the most interesting trips are visits to Frigiliana, one of the most visited white villages in the province, and Nerja with its caves, toured on an organised visit. There are also routes through Axarquía villages such as Cómpeta, and kayak or boat trips along the Maro cliffs. Málaga city is less than half an hour away by car.

How long to spend

You can see the town in a couple of hours strolling along the promenade and through the centre. If you are coming for the beach, stay several days and set aside half a day for Vélez-Málaga, another for Nerja and Frigiliana and a full day for Málaga city. In summer, use the mornings for trips and keep the afternoons for the beach.

Where to stay

The best area to stay is near the promenade, with the beach, restaurants and atmosphere a few steps away. The central streets around the main avenue are handy for shops and transport. If you want more peace, the developments towards the ends of the town are calmer, though a little further from the centre. In summer demand is high and it pays to book early.
