What to see in Albelda de Iregua

Must-sees

Albelda de Iregua is in the Iregua valley, a few kilometres from Logroño, among vineyards and market gardens. Its great history is the monastery of San Martín de Albelda, founded in the 10th century and one of the great cultural centres of Christian Spain in its time. Its scriptorium produced the Codex Albeldensis, in which Arabic numerals appear for the first time in the West. What remains of the monastery are the caves cut into the rock where the monks lived.

In the centre of the village is the 16th-century church of San Martín, built away from the rock face after several rockfalls. The Plaza Mayor is the village meeting point. On the outskirts there are several hermitages, such as Santa Fe de Palazuelos, on a knoll with views of the valley, or the Virgen de Bueyo. Very close is Monte Laturce, linked to the tradition of the Battle of Clavijo.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Albelda de Iregua. The most common activity is a visit to a village winery, with a tour of the facilities and a Rioja wine tasting. The cave complex of the old monastery can be explored on your own. If you want a fuller guided visit, combine the village with the wine tours that leave from Logroño.

How long to spend

The village and the monastery caves can be seen in two or three hours. If you add the winery visit with tasting, allow a long half day. With a full day you can head up the Iregua valley to Nalda and Islallana, and with two days you have time to combine it with Logroño and its Calle Laurel.

Where to stay

Albelda has little accommodation, with a few apartments and rural houses in the village centre, convenient if you have a car. For more options, the most practical choice is to stay in Logroño, about fifteen minutes away, in the old town or near Calle Laurel. Villages in the Iregua valley, such as Nalda, also have rural accommodation.
