What to see in Cabezabellosa

Must-sees

Cabezabellosa is in northern Cáceres province, in the Trasierra and Tierras de Granadilla area, on a balcony between the Jerte and Ambroz valleys. Its centre is the arcaded Plaza Mayor, home to the town hall, surrounded by stone houses with large wooden balconies. The 17th-century church of San Lorenzo keeps stone tombs, and around the village you will also see the El Chorrito washhouses and the Cruz del Cirineo.

The best is up high. At the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Castillo there is a viewpoint with walkways looking towards Las Hurdes, the Sierra de Gata, Granadilla and the Sierra de Francia. Higher up, Pico Pitolero offers wide views and is a paragliding take-off point. Around the village you will see Vettonian basins carved in stone, rock-cut tombs and the Acarreadero oak, a tree more than five centuries old.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no free walking tours in Cabezabellosa, but there are several nature activities. You can go on a horse ride around the area, a stargazing outing taking advantage of its dark skies or a guided hike. These are small-group plans, so book ahead.

How long to spend

The village can be seen in an hour or two, and the viewpoint at the hermitage of El Castillo deserves an unhurried stop. If you add a horse ride or a hike, allow half a day, and stargazing means staying the night. With two days you can also head down to the Jerte or Ambroz valleys.

Where to stay

The village has rural houses and apartments, the best option if you want to do the night outing or set off early to walk. If you cannot find a room, the villages of the Jerte valley, such as Jerte or Cabezuela del Valle, and of the Ambroz, such as Hervás, have more choice. Plasencia is a short drive away.
