What to see in Pola de Siero

Must-sees

Pola de Siero is the capital of the municipality of Siero, in central Asturias, between Oviedo and Gijón. It is a town with a strong commercial life, and its hallmark is its markets. The Tuesday market fills the centre with stalls of farm produce, and the covered market keeps the atmosphere going through the week. Pola de Siero's national livestock market is also one of the most important in northern Spain.

In the town, the parish church of San Pedro, the town hall and the 17th-century Palacio del Marqués de Santa Cruz stand out. Around the municipality there are rural churches and palaces worth a drive, such as San Esteban de Aramil, Santa María de la O de Limanes or the Meres and Celles palaces. The best-known festival is the Güevos Pintos, at Easter, with hand-painted eggs, cider and traditional music.

Free tours and guided visits

There are no regular free walking tours or guided visits in Pola de Siero. The most practical approach is to stroll through the centre on market day and ask at the town hall about routes around the municipality. The town lies on one of the branches of the Camino de Santiago towards Oviedo, and if you want guided visits, Oviedo and Gijón, less than half an hour away, have free walking tours almost daily.

How long to spend

Two or three hours are enough for the centre of Pola de Siero, ideally on a Tuesday to see the market in full swing. If you want to tour the churches and palaces of the municipality, allow another half day and a car. Thanks to its central location, Pola de Siero fits well as a stop on a route through Oviedo, Gijón and the Villaviciosa coast.

Where to stay

The most convenient option is to stay in the centre of Pola de Siero, near the covered market and the cider houses, so you can do everything on foot. Elsewhere in the municipality there are rural houses in quieter areas, and Lugones, next to Oviedo, also has places to stay. If you prefer more choice and atmosphere, Oviedo and Gijón are very close and make a good base for visiting the town on a day trip.
